1. Information We Collect
We collect the following types of information:
- Account Information: Email address and password when you create an account
- Profile Data: Display name and avatar photo you choose to provide
- User Content: Visit logs, photos, ratings, notes, discussion posts, and images you upload
- Usage Data: Favorites, wishlist, saved comparisons, and pass selections
- Location Data: Your approximate location if you grant permission (used for nearby resort suggestions)
- Device Information: Browser type, device type, and general usage patterns
2. How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
- Provide and improve the SkiAtlas service
- Personalize your experience (e.g., AI-powered recommendations via Ask Atlas)
- Display your content in relevant contexts (forums, tagged visits)
- Send account-related communications (password resets, notifications)
- Maintain platform security and prevent abuse
3. Photo & File Storage
Photos you upload (visit photos, avatars, discussion images) are stored securely in our cloud infrastructure using encrypted connections and private storage buckets with strict access controls.
- Visit photos are private by default. They are stored in a private bucket and protected by row-level security policies — only you and companions you explicitly tag on a visit can view them.
- Slideshow music files are stored privately and only accessible to you and anyone you share a slideshow with.
- Avatars and discussion images are publicly visible, as they appear in community-facing contexts.
- You stay in control. You can delete any photo, music file, or uploaded content at any time from your profile.
All file access is enforced at the database level — there is no way for another user to access your private photos or files without your explicit permission.
4. Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. Your data may be shared in the following limited circumstances:
- Public Content: Discussion posts, display names, and avatars are visible to other users
- Tagged Companions: When you tag another user in a visit, they can see that visit's details
- AI Features: Your profile data (favorites, visits, passes) may be sent to AI providers to generate personalized responses — no data is stored by these providers
- Legal Requirements: We may disclose data if required by law or to protect our rights
5. Cookies & Local Storage
We use browser local storage and cookies to maintain your session, remember preferences (language, theme), and store your Mapbox token. We do not use third-party tracking cookies.
6. Data Retention
Your data is retained as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your personal data and uploaded content will be removed. Anonymized or aggregated data may be retained for analytics purposes.
7. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your personal data through your profile and account settings
- Correct or update your profile information at any time
- Delete your uploaded content (photos, posts, visits)
- Request deletion of your account and associated data
- Opt out of location sharing at any time via browser settings
8. Children's Privacy
SkiAtlas is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us.
9. Security
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), secure authentication, and row-level access controls on all personal data. However, no system is 100% secure.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the Service. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
